Next Meeting
Of the
ASHRAE College of Fellows
Sunday, June 24, 2007 Beacon B Room, Hyatt Hotel Long Beach, CA 10-11:30 AM General Membership Meeting 8-10 AM Board of Directors and Advisory Committee Note: See agenda later in Newsletter. FASHRAE (What is this???)
The ASHRAE Board of Directors approved the designation for Fellows of ASHRAE as FASHRAE. Fellows may, and should, begin using this designation in correspondence and on cards, similar to the use of PE, as, for example: Bill Coad, PE, FASHRAE Notes from the President ASHRAE College of Fellows
It has been a pleasure leading the College as your President for the last year. We continue to see progress on several of the College key activities.
The Handbook reviews for the Refrigeration Handbook were completed. Mike Scofield arranged for the assigned chapter of each reviewer to get 25 PAOE points for each completed review. The College made progress on the ASHRAE College of Fellows Speakers Bureau with an Alpha test of the software approved by CTTC.
A College mentoring subcommittee was formed.
And, several members of the College gave input to ASHRAE GAME committee. (The ASHRAE GAME committee is tasked with Greening our Society Meetings.)
June always marks the transition of College Officers to our new leaders. Next year, Bill Coad will be the College President (he is from the Midwest) and Richard Rooley President-Elect (he is from England – he will be our first overseas President). Both Bill and Richard are Past-Presidents of the ASHRAE Society and have a number of connections inside and outside of the Society that will help them as they lead the College. Our newly elected Secretary for one term is George Sestak. He lives on the East Coast. Our new Treasurer, starting his 2 year term, is Bill Acorn from Tucson (the West Coast). Bill is a fairly new Fellow. Both George and Bill have both been very active in the College and will be a key part of the leadership team. Overall, the West, Midwest, East and Overseas will be represented this year. Cont..
Bill Bahnfleth is rolling off as Treasurer of the College, a position he has held for the last 2 years. The College thanks him for his efforts.
Our College Website (www.ashraecof.org) is doing great. We also worked with the College’s Admin Assistant and developed a task list by month for her and the Officers that will help keep the College running smoothly.
Our College meeting will be Sunday Morning at 10:00 AM in the Beacon B room in the Hyatt Hotel in Long Beach. Hope to see you in California!

CoF MENTORING PROGRAM
Recently I attended the Mechanical Engineering Conference at my Alma Mater the University of Delaware. The conference was attended by current students, faculty and alumni. One of the speakers was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. His presentation was consistently referencing the difficulty his organization has in hiring engineers. With our mentoring program in mind I spoke to him at the informal gathering before dinner. In that conversation I explained the ASHRAE College of Fellows effort to develop a mentoring program to address this issue from the elementary schools through college and into their early career years. I also asked for any suggestions he might have. His suggestion was that in Washington there is strength in numbers. Since he assumes that this is a problem across all engineering disciplines, we should make an effort to form an alliance with as many as possible. Utilizing the various Washington lobbyists representing each engineering group develop a plan for submission to Congress outlining the gravity of the situation with corrective solutions.
We have, on the College of Fellows, faculty and applications engineers in all avenues of HVACR work. I would present to the CoF the challenge to pursue the leadership role of bringing this concept to reality. It will take all of us to produce a successful program. I would invite my colleagues in the CoF to be prepared to discuss this matter in Long Beach. If you will be unable to make the Summer Meeting you can e-mail your comments to me at george.sestak@astrazeneca.com.
The growing shortage of engineers is an enormous problem. I challenge the ASHRAE CoF to lead the solution process.
