Newsletter of ASHRAE College of Fellows

June, 2006

INTRODUCTION

This is the first ASHRAE College of Fellows Newsletter.  Through it, your officers hope to inform you of activities of the College of Fellows, and increase interest and participation.

Newsletter distribution will be via e-mail to all Fellows with internet service, in order to minimize costs.  If you receive this via regular mail, and have e-mail service, please advise our Webmaster (ashraecof@aol.com) of your email address so we can send the newsletter electronically. If you are an ASHRAE Fellow who has not elected to become a member of the College of Fellows, PLEASE join (see page 4).  It’s free, and you will be welcome.

Notes from the President

This has been a very exciting year for me.  Election as an ASHRAE Fellow is indeed an honor. Each Fellow first had to be recognized for having done something significant for our industry and was fortunate enough to be nominated by his peers, and finally, was again fortunate enough to clear the rest of the selection process.  Now, to top that off, I have had the privilege of serving as the President of the College of Fellows during this continuation of our “start-up” time.  I must say, however, I haven’t done all I wanted to do during this year.

The College membership includes significant movers and shakers in the industry.  These great folks have accomplished many significant things and have retained lots of very valuable information, which is filed away “someplace” in that gray matter!  Now, our task is to retrieve the needed information when the file is accessed.  Do we double click on the left button or the right button to retrieve that file?  Anyway, there is a wealth of information within this elite group and we are busy networking and connecting the dots to use these people to benefit the Society and the industry.  As you can see in other parts of this newsletter, we have outlined many opportunities for Fellows to be of service:  Speakers’ Bureau, Handbook Review Team, Technical Paper Review Team, and ASHRAE e-Learning Institute Resource Person, permitting students to make contact and ask technical questions about the material or the subject being studied.  These are a few of the needy projects, and we are confident there will be many more as time goes on and folks see the very positive benefit of asking the CoF members for assistance.  If you’d like to be a member of one of these teams, please contact the Webmaster and let her know.  She will forward your note to the proper person and respond to you with the status of your inquiry.

I am thankful for a great group of officers and for the members of the Advisory Team.  You’ve been an inspiration and a big help to me.  I hope we can see the College membership increase to at least 25% of the total number of Fellows in the Society, which is about 1% of the total Society membership.  If we can have something worthy of membership, I’m sure others will join; that is, once they hear about the College.  At our stage of life, that “worthy cause” is normally related to “being needed” which is just what we’ve zeroed in on as we evaluated different programs.  If the younger members can do it, fine, let them do the task.  But, meanwhile, we “older, more seasoned” members can do things that younger members can’t yet do, due only to the lack of personal experience in that area, so, we should make ourselves known to the College of Fellows leaders and reap the reward of “being needed.”  The pay may not be great, but the benefits are priceless. The benefit of knowing we did a great job helping someone through some tough learning experiences or that we corrected an error or simplified an explanation in the World Renowned Handbook can be priceless to many Fellows.  How about to you?

Our incoming President, Art Hallstrom, will “grab the bull by the horns” this July and run a great program, I am certain.  I am also certain you will give him your support as the College moves on with the work we have mapped out for ourselves.

Hope to see you at the June meeting in Quebec City.

Respectfully,

Verle Williams, President 2005-6

Service Opportunities - Only Fellows Need Apply

1.            Handbook Reviewers – Fellows have been asked to review chapters of the 2005 Handbook, and provide comments which will be sent to the assigned Technical Committee responsible for each chapter.  Any Fellow may review any chapter, and the first three reviews provided will earn 25 PAOE points for the Fellow’s assigned chapter.  Handbook chapters for which reviews have been promised may be viewed at the College of Fellows Website: www.ashraecof.org.  But please note that the reviews are due by June 1, 2006, As of this writing, 25 of 40 chapters have one or two Fellow reviewers and 7 reviews have been received.

2.            Fellows are needed as resources for the newly-launched eLearning system (see ASHRAE Insights, April 2006.  Volunteers will be needed (a small stipend will be provided) as Subject Matter Experts to respond to inquiries from purchasers of the eLearning materials.  The first three subjects will be psychrometrics, fan selection, and duct layout.   The eLearning system will be managed by Bruce Kimball of ASHRAE staff.  He expects that few inquiries will be made, but he requests a rapid turnaround of 2-3 days following receipt of the inquiry.  If you are willing to assist in this valuable service, especially directed to young engineers, please advise Bruce via e-mail: bkimball@ashrae.org

ASHRAE College of Fellows Speakers Bureau

This is a new College of Fellows service to be introduced in summer of 2006. The CoF website will have a section where ASHRAE Fellows can post presentations they are willing to make to Chapters and CRC’s. Each speaker’s biographical info, subject of presentation and distance the Fellow is willing to travel with or without reimbursement will be posted. Chapter Program Chairs can search the list and contact the Fellow to arrange for a speaking engagement. This new procedure for offering experienced speakers to chapters is expected to improve chapter programs and meeting attendance. The COF Speakers Bureau will complement the highly successful ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturers Program. Fellows willing to participate may input their presentation title and other information at www.ashraecof.org soon after the Quebec City meeting.
